Waterloo regional police are investigating an incident in Kitchener that resulted in the death of one woman and sent another to hospital

Officers responded to a reported assault at an apartment building on Green Valley Drive around 6:40 a.m.

That's where police found a 71-year-old woman dead. No details have been released about how she died.

Police said another woman, a 74-year-old, had serious injuries from an assault.

She was taken to a hospital outside the region.

Police believe the two women knew each other but haven't said how they're connected.

They added that there's no concern for public safety.

Several police cruisers could been seen parked outside the apartment complex around 9 a.m. Police tape also surrounded the sidewalk and lawn on the side of the building.

Neighbours who spoke to CTV News said they didn’t see or hear anything Monday morning.

"A lot of police cars, ambulance, fire trucks were here," said one resident.

She describes the building as friendly place where most people know each other.

"Mostly we say hello or how are you or whatever. Sometimes we sit in the lobby and we talk, but overall, everyone is pretty upset about it."

Officers continue to canvass the neighbourhood for witnesses and tips in the case.

“The investigation is ongoing by members of our Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Unit and General Investigations Unit,” Const. Brad Hickey said.
