A section of King Street in downtown Kitchener is still closed for an investigation after a Sunday morning fire at the Stag Shop.
Damage from the blaze, which was discovered around 3 a.m. Sunday morning has been estimated at more than $500,000. There were no injuries.
Including the Stag Shop, five businesses were affected and the residents of one apartment haven't been able to go back inside.
The fire caused considerable damage to the building, and investigators are unable to enter the building until work to stabilize it is completed.
Chief Fire Investigator Tom Ruggle "It's hard to say at this point but we're looking at probably another two days on site and at that point the building will be turned back to the insurance company and the owner can start the restoration. We will be trying to get some of the affected owners back into their buildings so that they can do some restoration while our investigation is ongoing."
He believes crews will be able to safely enter the building Tuesday morning.
The cause has not yet been determined, but the fire isn't considered suspicious.
Crews hope to reopen at least one lane between Queen and Frederick Streets soon.
Business community pulling together
Kim Yuu is one of the owners of the Japanese restaurant Niko Niko Roll and Sushi, one of the businesses damaged by the fire.
But they were lucky, she says "At first we were shocked and when we came down here to look at it we just thought, thank God."
A manager at the Stag Shop told CTV News that while everyone at the company was upset, they were thankful no one got hurt. They also hope to open a new location in downtown Kitchener as soon as possible.
The downtown Kitchener Business Improvement Area (BIA) says they are ready to help any affected business that needs to move, and businesses have already come together to help each other.
The Yuus are feeling fortunate about how things turned out, with Sunday also being their daughter's birthday.
"[My daughter's] saying, this is my miracle birthday present because it stopped right there, right beside my restaurant, and if we find it like a minute later, maybe something happened to my business too, and then you're losing everything."
