A Kitchener woman who took her three-year-old daughter to St. Mary’s General Hospital on the weekend says staff there failed to diagnose her broken leg.
Unsatisfied after being told her daughter was fine, Jess Peer took her daughter Leah to Grand River Hospital, where doctors discovered she had a broken leg.
Officials from St. Mary’s say they can’t comment about this specific case due to confidentiality rules.
However, the incident has raised concerns for Jess that she wants to share with other parents.
Leah was playing in the backyard on Sunday and says she was “Jumping on a trampoline, then I broke it.” She will be in a cast for five weeks.
Jess says “I could tell right away something was wrong. She was screaming. We went right into the car and went to St. Mary’s Hospital.”
Once in the hospital’s emergency room, she says her daughter was seen right away, but the technician couldn’t take an x-ray because Leah was upset and moving around too much.
After agreeing to have Leah sedated for another x-ray, Jess says “The doctor told us that wasn’t necessary, she’s seen all that she needs to see, Leah’s fine, wrote us a prescription for liquid codeine and sent us home.”
But since her daughter was still in so much pain she took her to Grand River Hospital, where an x-ray proved she had a broken leg.
Jess believes St. Mary’s misdiagnosed Leah’s injury.
“Doctors have been to med school, but you know your child better than anybody.”
The hospital tells CTV News they still haven’t received a complaint and released a statement saying “We welcome the opportunity to speak with the family before we comment about this case.”
Jess says she is considering filing a formal complaint to St. Mary’s, but not until after Leah’s birthday celebrations on the weekend.
