The father of a University of Guelph student found dead last week says he and his family are “struggling through” their grief.

“It’s been very, very difficult,” John Bishop said Monday.

Andrew Bishop, 21, lived in the Holland Landing area north of Newmarket. He had just finished his first year at Guelph, and was planning on switching his focus from economics to computer science in September.

He disappeared early on the morning of May 1. His father says he saw him around midnight, and then realized he was missing at 8 a.m.

“We went to his room to wake him up (and) he just simply wasn’t there,” John Bishop said.

“We never saw or heard from him after that.”

Three days later, Bishop’s remains were found in a wooded area not far from his home by people cycling in the area.

York Regional Police say there were “signs of trauma” on the body. Bishop’s cause of death is not known, pending the result of a post-mortem examination.

University officials say they have a number of resources available to help students in need of counselling services, including an around-the-clock hotline reachable by calling 1-866-925-5454.
