Rising gas prices have drivers in Waterloo Region seeing red, and Grand River CarShare is hoping to capitalize on the frustration by dropping the membership cost of their green solution.
Grand River CarShare has been in operation for 14 years and has 550 members. They offer a number of perks meant to bolster membership, including prime parking spots.
"But one thing they can all appreciate, is that gas and the insurance and the maintenance are all included in the price," says CarShare President, Jason Hammond.
The price to become a member has dropped to just $10, plus $40 a month. It used to cost $400 to sign up.
"We found that the cost of joining was the biggest barrier. People understand that it's cheaper and more environmentally friendly" says Hammond.
One of those people is Hilary Abel. She's been a Carshare member since January.
"Originally I just thought that I would just look at Grand River CarShare for work, but now I'm realizing that we don't use our own personal car at all."
Hammond adds, it's not for everyone. Members also pay for every kilometre they drive, so it can add up.
"It's about having a flexible option and giving up that second car. Our threshold is about 12,000 kilometres a year."
