The outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness at Grand River Hospital’s Freeport site is over, officials say.

The hospital declared the outbreak Saturday after two patients and six staff members on the second floor of Freeport’s Union Terrace wing reported nausea, diarrhea and other symptoms consistent with a stomach virus.

For precautionary reasons, affected patients were isolated, affected staff were sent home and visits to the unit were limited.

Thursday was the first day the outbreak could be declared over, and word came down Thursday afternoon that it had indeed ended.

It is not clear what caused the outbreak.
