The former mayor of Woolwich Township has turned himself in, his lawyer says.
Tom Brock tells CTV News that Todd Cowan turned himself in around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
That came several hours after he failed to appear at a scheduled court date, prompting the issuing of a warrant for his arrest.
Tuesday’s events stem from the continuing court case of the former mayor on charges of breach of trust and fraud.
The charges relate to allegations that he billed both the township and the Region of Waterloo for the same expenses during his mayoral term.
Cowan admitted to the double-billing and paid the money back before the charges were laid.
He was rearrested in July after failing to appear at a court date.
During Tuesday’s morning’s proceeding, Brock told the court that he had placed 49 phone calls to Cowan and sent him six letters since the middle of August, and never heard anything in return.
Cowan turning himself in led police to rescind the arrest warrant.
The former mayor’s case returns to court next week.
He may need to be represented by a new lawyer, as Brock asked to be taken off the case during Tuesday’s court appearance.
Attempts to speak with Cowan for this story were unsuccessful.
