It’s a project many years in the making, but the long-awaited expansion of Cambridge Memorial Hospital is one step closer to becoming reality.

The hospital has issued a request for qualifications for the project, which means construction companies can now start declaring their interest in the expansion.

“Expansion is a go and moving forward,” Angelo Presta, the hospital’s director of capital redevelopment, tells CTV.

“What that means to the community, what that means to all of Waterloo Region, is an expansion of service.”

Hospital officials hope construction work on the expansion, which is expected to cost between $150 million and $200 million, will begin next summer and be complete in three to four years.

Plans for the expansion include a new wing for acute care, as well as surgical and birthing suites and a mental health unit.
