A Brant County woman won’t have to wait long to undergo the surgery that was postponed because the doctor scheduled to perform it was arrested for the murder of his wife.

Erika Crawford’s operation was scheduled for Monday morning.

It was to be the first time she received surgery for symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in Ontario. Her parents have spent more than $250,000 seeing a specialist in Maryland, which OHIP has not covered.

The surgery was then cancelled days before it was supposed to happen, following the arrest of Dr. Mohammed Shamji.

On Tuesday, Crawford and her parents met with the new neurosurgeon assigned to them following Shamji’s arrest. They were told that the surgery should take place the week of Dec. 19.

Her mother, Michelle Crawford, says the family is happy with the resolution and feel they are in good hands.

Other people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome scheduled for surgeries this month have also been told that new neurosurgeons will be assigned to them by the end of the week.
