ORANGEVILLE, Ont. -- A provincial police officer has been injured in a collision in Dufferin County where a state of emergency has been declared due to blowing and drifting snow and frigid temperatures.

Const. Paul Nancekivell says the officer was investigating a collision involving a transport truck Wednesday afternoon when a second transport hit her cruiser from behind, pushing it into the first truck.

Nancekivell says the officer was treated in hospital and released, and police are encouraging drivers to stay off the roads in Dufferin County, northwest of Toronto.

County warden Bill Hill declared the emergency Wednesday afternoon due to the bad weather that has resulted in multiple road closures.

Hill says the weather has also had a major impact on critical infrastructure in the county northwest of Toronto.

Hill says in a release that local resources have been exhausted and mutual assistance agreements need to be implemented to manage this situation.

Environment Canada says a blustery and very cold weather pattern is expected to produce localized blowing and drifting snow and associated poor visibilities throughout the day.
