A Kitchener man was seriously injured Friday night, after a fire broke out in his downtown Kitchener apartment.

The fire started just before 10 p.m. at 84 King Street W. Witnesses say flames were shooting out of the windows of the unit, which is above Dandy's Restaurant at King and Ontario Streets.

Marwan Abdul Kareem was downtown when he spotted the fire. "It started with a little bit of lights and then flames. And then the window exploded and just shattered and fell on the street."

The blaze gutted the man's apartment, and damaged the one below.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire before it spread to neighbouring businesses. Says Kitchener Platoon Chief Kevin Karley: "The majority of it was surface burning and the contents that were inside the structure, so there's no real concern for the structure itself."

The man's roommate, John Worthen, says he was badly burnt and was taken to Hamilton General Hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However Platoon Chief Karley says it's not believed to be suspicious.
