A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured Monday night when his car flipped over a guardrail and into a ravine along Speedsville Road in Cambridge.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m., and left the teen pinned in his vehicle.

Roads in the area were closed for several hours as firefighters worked to free the boy and police investigated the collision.

“It’s a bit early to say whether speed was or was not a factor,” said Sgt. John van Breda of Waterloo Regional Police.

The driver was taken to a Hamilton hospital for treatment.

He has been identified as Chris Haas, a student and football player at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School.

On Twitter, friends sent well wishes with the hashtag #prayforhaas.

Haas, a linebacker, had been expected to play in his school’s CWOSSA semifinal Tuesday against Centennial CVI of Guelph.

According to Jacob Hespeler football coach Greg White, Haas’ family members and teammates all wanted to go ahead with the game.

“We’re just happy he’s pulling through,” White told CTV News.

“If you look at the photos of the car, I think there was an angel there.”

Haas has undergone surgery to amputate part of his foot and is said to be doing well in hospital.

His injuries also include a cracked sternum and cracked vertebrae.
