Just an hour after sunrise, the OPP’s underwater search and recovery team was back in New Hamburg's Nith River searching for 5-year-old Robbie Reiner.
Police slowly walked the length of the river searching along the banks and under the ice clusters.
Deputy Chief of Police Operations Kevin Chalk says by the end of tomorrow they’re confident the open water search will be completed. If they don’t find Robbie, Chalk says they will have to re-evaluate how long the search will continue.
“It's a tough decision for the divers. There is nothing they want more than to bring closure for the family and all the officers involved with the family and the community.” Chalk says.
Many people in New Hamburg have decided that they will gather Saturday night in support of the Reiner family for a candlelight vigil in Robbie’s honour.
Christa Yost and Lori Otterbein have been organizing the vigil. Both went to high school with members of the Reiner family.
“You can only deliver so many meals to the family.” Yost says.
Both women say the vigil is a way of showing Robbie’s family the community of New Hamburg and beyond has them in their prayers.
“We want to show the Reiner’s that were there to support them and to be there for them through this hard time.” Otterbein tells CTV News.
