A fire that broke out New Year’s Eve at a Guelph home was caused by careless smoking, officials say.
The fire broke out around 9 p.m. that night on Irving Crescent, in Guelph’s south end.
Flames started in the garage before quickly spreading to the rest of the house – and flaring up high enough that they could be seen from blocks away.
The Ontario Fire Marshal says careless smoking is to blame for the fire.
Nobody was injured as a result of the fire, but damage is estimated at $500,000.
Police have said that the house will have to be demolished.
