A 77-year-old man has been charged with careless driving in connection with the crash that killed 16-year-old Jeremy Wickenheiser.
Arnold Vanmoorsel, a West Perth resident, will appear in court in July.
Wickenheiser died Wednesday when his motorcycle collided with Vanmoorsel’s pickup truck on Line 40 in Perth East, near his home.
According to Perth County OPP, the pickup truck was crossing Line 40 at Road 110 – an intersection controlled by a stop sign – when it pulled directly into the path of the motorcycle.
Wickenheiser was a student at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School.
He leaves behind two brothers – one of whom, Tim, returned to school Thursday.
“We can’t understand exactly what’s he’s going through … but we can certainly imagine the things that they’ve shared together,” school principal Martin Ritsma said.
Friend Zach Otto remembered Wickenheiser as a passionate dirt bike racer and avid outdoorsman.
“Him and his brother Tim, they were always out on their snowmobiles,” he said.
“He was a great guy. I’ll never forget him.”
Thursday, a number of his friends left flowers and other items at the site of the crash, including a message that simply read “I miss you bud.”
Vanmoorsel was also taken to hospital as a result of the crash, but was not seriously injured.
Contacted by CTV News, he said his thoughts were with the Wickenheiser family.
