A group of Breslau residents are continuing their fight against selling a portion of Breslau Memorial Park to build a school and community centre.
Woolwich Township and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board announced earlier this year that they planned to build a school and library in the park.
In exchange for four acres of the 19-acre park, the school board would provide the township with $1.75 million.
Breslau residents would be given access to the library, and possibly the school’s gym as well – but for some of them, that’s not enough.
“The greenspace, for us, is not up for sale,” Julie Taylor told CTV News.
“Many of us who moved here recently were under the understanding that this park would always be here.”
Woolwich councillors originally voted against the project, but changed their minds last month and voted to sell the land.
A final decision on the issue isn’t expected until late January.
The school board still plans to build a Catholic elementary school in Breslau, as a replacement for the closing St. Boniface Catholic Elementary School in Maryhill.
Residents say they don't mind a Catholic school being built in Breslau, as long as it isn't in the park.
