Dive teams pulled the body of a man from Victoria Park lake Saturday morning.

Waterloo Regional Police say 40-year old Barry Ek was reported missing around 7:30 Friday night.

A passerby saw Ek, who uses a wheelchair, sitting on the rocks at the water’s edge. A few minutes later he noticed Ek was gone, but his wheelchair remained and his headphones were floating in the water.

Emergency crews were called to the lake, but they had to give up their search when it grew dark.

A Search and Rescue Dive Team from the Niagara Regional Police Service was called in to assist with the search Saturday morning.

Ek’s body was found just after 11 a.m.

Friends say Ek often sat along the water’s edge in Victoria Park.

“He was very outgoing,” said Nicholas Free. “He was not afraid to talk to anybody, and he just loved the attention, he thrived in the attention.... He'll be missed for sure.”

Ek's body has been taken to Hamilton General Hospital for a post-mortem examination on Monday.

Foul play is not suspected.
