Several hours after a rented boat went missing off the coast of Lake Erie, it was found by a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter.

According to Norfolk County OPP, the 16-foot bow rider boat was rented from Turkey Point Powersports around 5:15 p.m. Monday.

As dusk approached, with no sign of the boat or its four occupants, police were called.

A massive search ensued, with the coast guard deploying rescue boats and with a Canadian Forces Griffon helicopter brought in from Trenton, 300 kilometres away.

Around 10:40 p.m., the helicopter crew saw a flare go up from the lake.

The boat was then found in the water, east of Turkey Point, and towed back to the marina.

Everyone aboard was said to be unhurt.
