People across Guelph and Waterloo Region are celebrating the start of Hanukkah.

The Jewish festival began at sundown on Wednesday and will continue until Jan. 2.

This marks the first time in almost 20 years that Hanukkah began on the same day as Christmas.

A giant menorah will be lit at Guelph’s Market Square on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The event also includes a series of indoor activities including a Dreidel Scavenger Hunt, oil press workshop, face painting and Hanukkah story time.

To help light up the darkness, three more Menorah lightings have been planned in Waterloo Region:

  • Cambridge City Hall on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
  • Waterloo Public Square on Dec. 29 at 6 p.m.
  • Kitchener City Hall on Dec. 30 at 6 p.m.
