As Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit continues to look into the police shooting of Beau Baker outside a townhouse, the 20-year-old’s family is calling for action to be taken against the officer believed to have pulled the trigger.
“Until the family has more answers, they’re left to wonder whether or not the police officers who were involved … dealt with the situation in the most appropriate way,” Michael Lacy, a lawyer representing family members, tells CTV News.
“It’s also the concern that there has to be some residual trauma and associated emotional upset for the officer as well.”
Baker was shot and killed by police outside a Brybeck Crescent residence on April 2. Witnesses said he was holding a knife at the time.
An online petition has also sprung up, launched by family members and addressed to Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin.
The petition calls for the officer involved in the shooting to be pulled from active duty pending the end of the SIU investigation.
While the officer remains on active duty, they are not working as a frontline officer, Waterloo Regional Police said in a statement.
