A gas station in Elmira is the latest business hit in a string of ATM thefts in the Waterloo Region area.

Waterloo Regional police responded to the Esso gas station at the corner of Arthur Street and Listowel Road around 2:20 Thursday morning.

When they arrived on the scene, officers found a smashed window and a hole in the wall where an ATM once stood.

Officials say they believe rocks were used to break the large pain of glass in the front of the convenience store.  A 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck was then backed up close to the window.  A chain or rope was tethered to the bank machine and it was yanked out of the store.  The ATM was then loaded into the back of the truck which then sped away.

Police say they are in possession of surveillance video from inside the store, and from exterior cameras by the gas bar.

This incident is the eighth bank machine theft in the area since the beginning of the year.
