Guelph Police are marking the one-year anniversary of the death of Const. Jennifer Kovach in several ways.
Kovach, 26, was killed on March 14, 2013, while responding to a fellow officer’s call for assistance.
Excessive speed and icy conditions caused her cruiser to cross over Imperial Road, into the path of an oncoming city bus.
She was the third Guelph Police officer to die in the line of duty.
On the anniversary of her death, a small display was set up inside Guelph Police headquarters, featuring a wreath and book of condolences.
Outside the building, flags were flying at half-staff.
Photos of Kovach and flowers were also taped to a streetlight on Imperial Road at the scene of her crash, and Guelph Police officers added memorial pins with Kovach’s badge number to their uniforms for the day.
“It is really important to pay honour and respect to Const. Jennifer Kovach, who lost her life serving the citizens of Guelph,” Chief Bryan Larkin tells CTV News.
“We think it’s a fitting tribute. It really signifies our courage and our strength, and our integrity as a police service to continue moving forward, but never forgetting the life of Jennifer.”
Larkin says he’s proud of the wider Guelph community for supporting the police service and Kovach’s family over the past year.
