The Ministry of Labour has wrapped up its investigation into the on-duty death of Const. Jennifer Kovach last March.
Kovach, 26, was killed when her cruiser crossed over to the wrong side of Imperial Road and struck an oncoming city bus.
She was on her way to assist another officer at the time, and was travelling at 121 km/h on an ice-covered road.
A police investigation of the crash found that excessive speed and weather conditions were the main factors in the crash.
Ministry of Labour spokesperson Bruce Skeaff says ministry investigators found no violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and will not be laying any charges in relation to the crash.
“Our file is closed,” Skeaff said in an email to CTV News.
Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin says he hopes the ministry’s findings will bring further closure to Kovach’s family.
“The Guelph Police Service co-operated fully with the Ministry of Labour, and we are thankful for their thorough review,” he said in an email.
“We are committed to continuing an organizational enhanced approach to police road safety to prevent any further tragedies.”
Kovach was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, but investigators do not believe that contributed to her death.
