Construction on the ION Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility building is nearing completion.
The facility located on Dutton Drive, will be the central hub for the entire LRT system, and it’s expected to be done sometime in September.
John Almeida Construction manager said, “This building will house the administrative offices and it will also be the location where vehicles are maintained and washed.”
In October, a fire broke out on the roof of the building. Nearly 40 percent of it was damaged, and since then no official cause has been released.
Days after the fire took place; an investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office said damages would exceed $500,000.
According to officials, work has quickly progressed, and the facility is just a few months from being ready. “We engaged in an accelerated process here so we were able to recover a lot of the time that was lost due to the fire,” said Almeida.
Regional Councillor Tom Galloway, said the entire LRT project is about 60 percent finished. "Grandlinq is more or less on schedule.
"They may be a few months behind, but we have a fair bit of wiggle room in the construction schedule so we're not too worried about that," said Galloway.
Local officials confirm construction will be wrapped up by the time Bombardier is ready to deliver the trains.
A strike at Bombardier means the LRT launch date was pushed into 2018.
