A 22-year-old man is facing multiple criminal charges following an afternoon-long police action that involved one officer firing at an SUV and police methodically searching a northwest Kitchener apartment building.
The incident began around 2 p.m. Thursday, when Waterloo Regional Police officers approached an SUV on Westwood Drive.
Police say they believed the vehicle was stolen, and its driver may have had a weapon.
The SUV then allegedly started to drive toward police officers, at which point one officer fired at the vehicle in an attempt to stop it.
“The officer that deployed his weapon was concerned that the driver was driving toward the other officer, and there was a danger to that officer’s life,” Insp. Craig Ambrose told CTV News.
While the vehicle was left inoperable, the driver was able to get away from the area.
As the afternoon wore on, police turned their attention to an apartment building on nearby Mooregate Crescent, which they believed the driver was inside.
“There was a few police officers laying on the ground with guns,” said Igor Rasevic, who was in the area on business at the time.
A little after 6 p.m., one man was taken out of the building and into a police cruiser.
Senad Haskic is facing a number of charges in connection with the incident, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon, drug possession and breach of probation.
Police say he was also wanted on outstanding warrants for robbery and breach of probation.
Haskic made a brief court appearance Friday, and remains in custody.
