Authorities say two students were hit with projectiles from BB guns while walking on King Street in Waterloo this week – in one case, causing eye injuries.
The more serious of the two incidents occurred just before 6 p.m. Monday, between Hickory and Columbia streets.
A 19-year-old Wilfrid Laurier University student was shot in the eye, receiving serious injuries.
It was not clear where the projectile was fired from.
Many hours earlier – a little after 1 a.m. – another female student was shot in the collarbone area while walking along the same block.
Waterloo Regional Police say they’re looking into potential links between the two incidents.
In the meantime, Laurier has added an extra special constable shift.
A group run by the school’s student union also offers students walks or drives home in cases where they may feel unsafe.
“We’re doing our best to make sure that there are some alternatives to getting home,” school spokesperson Kevin Crowley said in an interview.
“A BB gun, as we saw in this case, can do very serious damage.”
The school has also emailed all students to alert them to the incidents, Crowley said.
