If you’re used to putting your garbage at the curb every week in Waterloo Region, you have 93 more chances to do so before you’ll have to change your routine.

Regional councillors have voted to adopt a biweekly garbage collection plan starting in March 2017.

Under the terms of the plan, recycling and green bins would continue to be picked up every week.

For people living in the region’s rural areas, that actually represents an increase in service. Some township residents receive recycling pickup every two weeks, and do not currently have green bins.

Homeowners will also be subject to a limit of four garbage bags per biweekly collection, with the limit scheduled to drop to three bags by 2019.

The March 2017 start date was picked as that month is when the region’s current waste collection contract expires.

Supporters of the plan say it will help encourage recycling and green bin use, while detractors worry about an increase in roadside dumping and foul odours.

The decision was made Tuesday at regional council’s planning and works committee.

It will be voted on next week by regional council, which is comprised of the same people.
