Nick the swan, whose mate Angela was beaten to death in an incident that shook the Stratford, Ont. community last May, may have a new mate.

Since Angela's death, and the destruction of their eggs and nest, Nick has spent the summer, fall and winter alone.

But he appears to finally be ready to get his feet wet again. He reportedly left his winter quarters a little early, but he wasn't alone.

The lovebirds, Nick and a female known as Lacey, have been spotted on the Avon River, publicly professing their newfound affection.

But Quin Malott, Stratford's manager of Parks and Forestry, says "We don't know if they're a couple yet obviously, time will tell if they decide to make a nest or not."

The community is behind the pair's second chance, whatever happens.

Leila Gosnell says "Well I hope it's possible certainly, because I'm a divorced woman and I hope that there's love a second time around."

Maureen Ballantyne, who says she's found love twice adds, "I would say second time around could be just as wonderful as the first time, if not better."

Even city officials are hoping for a happy ending.

Malott says "I think if Nick hooks up with another young swan, that everybody would be happy, it would be a happy ending."

And for a bird species that is well-known to mate for life, it very well may be a lovely swan song of sorts.
