The Cambridge Fire Department and Office of the Fire Marshal continue to investigate a house fire in Cambridge’s south end, but it’s Waterloo Regional Police leading the probe.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning at a family home on The Greenway.

While few details are known, one person was taken to hospital and placed on life support.

Fire officials directed inquiries from CTV News to police – who, when asked about the age and gender of the victim, did not provide that information.

“The identity of the victim is something we, from an investigative standpoint, choose not to release,” said police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

“It could potentially impact on the ongoing investigation.”

Sunday, police examined evidence including a toy car destroyed by the fire and two blankets likely intended for a young boy.

“We have questions that need answers, and we’re working on those,” Heinzel said.

Police do believe the injuries suffered by the occupant are related to the fire.

The fire itself was extinguished before it could cause a lot of damage, although smoke damage permeates the home.
