Kids calling on friends to play outside turned into a horrific scene in Kitchener. A young child who was eager to join his friends fell out of a second story window on Saturday.

“It was approximately 2:37 p.m. in the afternoon. We had a report of a three year old boy that fell out of a window,” said Waterloo Regional Police Staff Sergeant Perry Kort.

Police say a group of boys were playing on the street and yelled for a pair of brothers at this home to come outside.

“Of course the three year old, he's excited. So he gets on the old bedroom bed, and looks outside, and falls through the screen,” Kort added.

The boy's parents say they're thankful. Their son came home from the hospital after a couple of hours and is now fine. They hope this is a lesson all parents will listen to.

This comes after a series of similar incidents in the GTA. Earlier this month a four-year-old girl fell from a fourth floor window of an apartment building and sustained serious injuries.

Another child was rushed to hospital after falling out of a second story window at a Bayview area home.

In July, a seven year old boy was critically injured after falling onto a concrete patio from a third story window in Scarborough.

Window retailers say parents need to be reminded window screens are not designed to prevent falls.

“A screen is meant to keep bugs out and to keep things from the outside in. They are not meant to keep people in the room,” said Home Hardware owner Brad Swanson.

Safe Kids Canada says with warm weather, it's natural to keep windows open. To prevent injuries, they recommend installing a window guard or stop, and keeping furniture away so kids can't climb up to the window.
