One person has died after a fire broke out in the garage of a Guelph home early Saturday morning.
Fire crews were called to 2 Deerpath Drive, just north of Imperial Road South, around 2:32 a.m.
When they arrived on scene they found the garage and first storey of the home were “fully involved.”
“You have the high winds and that adds to the fueling of the fire,” said Fire Prevention Officer Matt Valeriote. “That can be a problem.”
Officials say there were five people inside the home at the time of the fire.
All of them were taken to Guelph General Hospital.
At least one person has died from their injuries. The condition of the other four has not been released.
Neighbours stood stunned on the street as fire crews battled the blaze.
Ming Chhor lives across the street from the home. “Just a big torch of fire… smoke everywhere.”
Jason Kane said he heard an “explosion” or “big bang.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Valeriote says it’s not considered suspicious.
Damage to the home has been estimated at $300,000.
