A memorial continued to grow Monday at the site where 73-year-old John Gaudet was fatally hit by a mailbox while waiting for a bus.

Gaudet had been waiting at the corner of Highland Road and Heiman Street in Kitchener last Thursday, when a black sedan turned left at the intersection.

Witnesses said the sedan had turned into the path of a second car, which in turn hit a third car, a stop sign and the mailbox which then struck Gaudet, who died in hospital Sunday.

Police have been unable to locate the black car, and hope somebody in the community has information about it they can pass on to investigators.

“We’re looking for more information about that vehicle, which is possibly a Chrysler,” Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Alana Holtom said Tuesday.

Among the items left at the scene Tuesday were flowers, condolence messages and a candle.

Family members say Gaudet was retired, and had previously worked for Canada Post.

He lived at Conestoga Lodge, where Stephanie Tambwe works as a dietary aid.

In an interview, Tambwe said that she knew Gaudet as someone who had lots of friends and was quick with a joke.

“He always had a smile on his face, no matter what he was going through,” she said.
