St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener closed its Intensive Care and Coronary Care units Saturday morning due to flooding.
Officials say the flooding was caused by melting snow and rain on the second floor roof above the ICU.
They add 11 patients were safely moved to another part of the building, where they are receiving care.
“At this time, our priority is ensuring that patients continue to be comfortable and safe, with their health and well-being top of mind,” Don Shilton, president of St. Mary’s Hospital, says in a release. “We will do emergency surgeries on a select basis and assess them case by case.”
No surgeries were affected as a result of the flood.
A spokesperson for the hospital says extra staff was called in to help the cleanup, which was still underway as of Sunday.
The hospital’s engineering department has confirmed the roof is damaged – likely the result of last week’s heavy snowfall.
In a release, St. Mary’s says they anticipate the repair, restoration and cleanup process to be complete sometime Monday.
