More than $925,000 in government funding for the Centre in the Square was announced Wednesday.
The money will be put toward a series of renovation projects at the downtown Kitchener venue. Some parts of the facility will see their first upgrades since the building opened in 1980.
That list includes some of the venue’s seating, as well as its dressing rooms.
“They are a little in need of some tender, loving care – actually a lot in need of tender, loving care,” Centre in the Square general manager Rob Sonoda told reporters.
Other upgrades earmarked with the new funding include converting lighting to LED, with computer-controlled systems, and work to make the facility’s washrooms accessible.
The $925,860 funding was announced by Kitchener Centre MP Raj Saini, who praised the facility as an “economic driver” that helps attract people to Waterloo Region.
“People who move here also want to be able to access … a vibrant arts and culture community,” he said.
The money is part of the federal government’s Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, which plans to award $168.2 million over two years.
