Waterloo Regional Police say a 23-year-old man is now dead after a crash at a Conestoga College campus parking lot.

Just before midnight, the man lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a tree on Doon Valley Drive, in parking lot 5, according to police.

He had gone there with two friends to practice riding, according to police.

The driver was pronounced dead at hospital.

A spokesperson for the college said that they will be cooperating with the Waterloo Regional Police Service.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who ‎ lost his life this morning as a result of the accident," said Brenda Cassidy, with Conestoga College.

Police say the man did have a beginner’s motorcycle license.

"At this time we don't believe alcohol was involved. We can't say at this time for sure whether or not speed  was a factor, again as I said, it looks like he just lost control of his bike possibly due to inexperience and struck the tree," said Terri Turner, Sgt. of the Traffic Branch for the Waterloo Regional Police Service.
