Firefighters responded to massive house fire on Ellis Road in Puslinch early Saturday morning.

The 14 people living in the house, are now displaced, but officials say thanks to working fire alarms they all got out of the burning building safely.

Deputy Fire Chief with Puslinch Fire, Luis Gomes, says the fire started in the basement at around     4:00 a.m.

“When we arrived on the scene fully engulfed already flames were coming out of the basement window first story window, second story window.”

Neighbour Shannon Morrison watched as more than 30 firefighters from four stations responded.

“They've lost everything and it’s extremely sad and we're just so happy that they all made it out okay because it was very scary,” says Morrison.

For firefighters, one of the biggest challenges they face in rural fires is that water has to be trucked in.

“We set up our pumper as close as we could and got attack lines to the fire quickly,” says Gomes.

Additional firefighters from Cambridge, Guelph and Rockwood were called in to help.

“A Cambridge tanker then came with nine thousand litres of water and they pumped into our tanker and that gave us a lot more water.”

The fire isn’t believed to be suspicious.

Gomes says it’s still unclear how the fire started and while he doesn’t have a damage estimate, he believes a home like this one could cost millions to replace.
