A teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in connection with an alleged sexual encounter with a student.
Waterloo Regional Police say Ian Sommer was arrested Wednesday in connection with an alleged event that took place earlier in the school year, at a school facility.
He was later released from custody on a promise to appear in court Nov. 14.
The website of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario lists Sommer as an executive with the board and a teacher at Kitchener's Queensmount Public School.
In the past, he taught at Forest Glen Public School in New Hamburg.
In an email, a spokeperson for the WRDSB said the board is co-operating with the police investigation and has assigned Sommer to "home duty".
"We are very concerned about these disturbing allegations," superintendent Laura Hodgins wrote.
"Student safety is always our first priority."
Reached by CTV News on Friday, Sommer declined to comment on the allegations against him.
