A Waterloo-based company wants to start growing medical marijuana on a property in Grey County.

The identity of the company is not known, but the Town of Hanover announced in a press release this week that the property where the company wants to operate is zoned correctly for that operation.

Plans for the medical marijuana operation were first made public by the town in November.

At the time, Mayor Kathi Maskell told CTV News the town made the proposal public in the interest of transparency.

She also estimated the operation would mean five to 10 new jobs coming to town.

“This is not a huge economic driver, however, if you’re one of those five people or 10 people, it would be really important,” she said.

Obstacles still in the company’s way as of November were adherence to zoning requirements – which the town now believes does exist – and a Health Canada growing licence.

The company has applied for the licence, and may hear back from Health Canada by the end of the month.
