Two 13-year-old boys are facing multiple criminal charges in connection with the New Year’s Day vandalism spree at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
Waterloo Regional Police announced the charges Friday, saying they didn’t expect to make any further arrests in the case.
“The arrests were made as a result of numerous tips from the community,” Staff Sgt. Shaena Morris tells CTV News.
The damage occurred early Wednesday morning, and early estimates place the total cleanup cost at more than $100,000.
Later in the day, officials discovered smashed doors, windows, computers and televisions, as well as smashed glass around the building’s ice rink, a sprayed fire extinguisher and a trail of blood leading to a washroom.
The teens are charged with breaking and entering, theft, mischief and possession of stolen property.
“They are quite young. They will be handled accordingly under the Youth Criminal Justice Act,” says Morris, adding that the theft charges relate to “several smaller items” taken from the building.
Woolwich Township officials say the building’s two arenas and community room will reopen Saturday.
Fitness classes will remain cancelled until Monday, while the pool – which had to be drained due to the presence of glass – will stay closed until Jan. 11.
