Two historic buildings in downtown Kitchener could soon come down. The city’s chief building official has issued demolition orders for the Mayfair Hotel and the adjoining building on King Street.

Fences now secure the area as there are concerns that the buildings are unsafe.

Mike Seiling says serious structural issues identified by engineers could cause them to collapse.

A common wall shared by the two buildings, means the loss of one building, and could jeopardize the safety of the other.

The building’s owner has submitted a demolition plan, which is now being reviewed by city officials.

A number of people have challenged the demolition order, saying the building should be saved because of its heritage.

Seiling says once he’s satisfied the plan addresses all of the concerns a demolition permit will be issued to the owner.

Work tearing down the structure could be underway early next week.
