Residents in a Guelph neighbourhood woke to find a trailer on Grange Road engulfed in flames shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The blaze demolished the camping trailer and heat from the fire melted the vinyl siding of two nearby homes.
Neighbours assisted in evacuating the homes near the fire and there were no injuries.
The trailer and one of the damaged homes belongs to the Storey family, Mike, Christine and their two young children.
Christine says "It was right at our son's window, so that's scary, because if people hadn't seen it who knows what would have happened."
Christine and her family were awoken by her brother, who lives just a few doors down.
Earl Mcevoy says "I just came running, running down the stairs, ran out the door and came over and started banging on the window here."
Fortunately, the trailer was not hooked up to any electrical source or accelerant. The trailer door had been left open and the canopy up to air it out from a weekend trip to a baseball tournament.
Mike Storey says "After we looked at it, after the fire was out, we noticed that the door was open and there was obvious signs of ignition close to the door."
Police believe someone deliberately set the fire and are investigating. The total damage to the home is estimated at around $30,000. That does not include the cost of replacing the trailer.
Guelph Police Const. Mike Gatto says "If you did see something, if you were up and around at three in the morning or around that time and you saw kids in the area, suspicious people in the area, a car in the area, anything you think was suspicious, give us a call."
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-824-1212 Ext. 241 or 242. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Meanwhile, Christine is worried about how her kids will react, "They're scared, they're scared. So we'll see how sleeping goes tonight."
