The Region of Waterloo is ready to move forward with its summer construction projects.

They’ve put out a list of planned road closures, starting this spring and continuing through the fall.

These projects, totalling $73 million, are in addition to continuing LRT construction.

The region says they’re working with rapid transit construction, deferring work on roads being used as detours on the LRT route.

“We’ve got a pretty diverse and extensive program this year in all three major citites, as well as work in the townships,” says Gary MacDonald, Transportation Rehabilitation. “We’re putting our efforts together to coordinate things with the rapid transit construction so that it’s not too onerous on drivers to get around the communities.”

The biggest project this summer will be the intersection of King Street East and Fountain Street in Cambridge.

That project alone is pegged at $18 million.

“It includes bike lanes, full road reconstruction,” says MacDonald. “All the infrastructure underground has to be replaced also.”

That means the work will expand beyond the intersection, to Shantz Hill and Cherry Blossom.

MacDonald says construction will be completed in stages to allow for local traffic between Kitchener and Preston.
