It’s back to business as usual at St. Mary’s General Hospital.

The hospital announced Monday that an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness has been declared over.

The outbreak began last week in the general medicine unit on the Kitchener hospital’s fifth floor.

When the outbreak was declared, five patients and four staff members had symptoms consistent with a gastrointestinal illness.

A sixth patient was also affected, as were two additional staff members.

Hospital officials say two of the six patients were sick when they were admitted to hospital, while the other four became ill after being admitted.

All those affected have since recovered or begun recovery, hospital officials say.

With the end to the outbreak, visitor restrictions have been lifted – but as usual, anyone feeling ill is asked not to visit the hospital.
