Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents to tread carefully around frozen waterways after a snowmobile fell through ice on Conestoga Lake.

According to police, the snowmobile fell through the ice at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Wellington County OPP, Guelph-Wellington EMS and Mapleton Fire officers were all called to the scene.

Police say a man operating a snowmobile went through the ice. A friend saw the incident and attempted to rescue the man with an ATV, but he too fell through the ice.

Both men were able to reach shore on their own and did not require medical attention.

OPP say ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness across most lakes and rivers. Clear blue ice is the strongest, with white and opaque ice much weaker.
