Two Brantford residents who were charged after 40 ball python snakes were found in a motel have pleaded guilty to Ontario SPCA Act charges, the OSPCA says.

Last August, the pythons – some more than a metre long – were found in plastic storage bins at the Bell City Motel.

At the time, the OSPCA said the snakes weren’t left with adequate supplies of water or living space.

Once the owners of the snakes were tracked down, they agreed to surrender the reptiles to authorities.

According to the OSPCA, the owners did not appear for a court date last week, where they were found guilty of three counts of animal cruelty.

The pair were fined $1,000 each, ordered to repay the Brant County SPCA for its costs in dealing with the snakes, and banned from owning or caring for any animal for the next 10 years.

Pythons are prohibited in Brantford under local animal control bylaws.
