A by-law was passed Wednesday night endorsing a decision by Waterloo voters to end fluoridation of tap water in the city.

Residents narrowly voted against continuing to fluoridate tap water in a referendum question during the municipal election, with 50.3 per cent saying ‘no' to the practice.

Waterloo has been fluoridating tap water since 1967.

Dentists again appealed to councillors to ignore the outcome of the vote at the meeting Wednesday night.

However, the mayor and councillors had said they would honour the wishes of the majority.

The fluoride is expected to be turned off in Waterloo by Nov. 29, and the region plans to monitor the impact on dental health and focus on other oral health initiatives.
