Members of Kitchener’s Filipino community are struggling to get in touch loved ones in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded.
Power and telephone lines are still down in most of the country, making communication difficult.
“I don’t know how my mom is, how my brother is, and family, and I just hope that they are fine,” says Lina Law.
The last time Law spoke with her family, they told her the storm had forced them out of their homes.
That was about three days ago.
“The roofs are gone, schools have no more roofs. My neighbours have no more houses to live in.”
As Law anxiously watches and waits, agencies like the Red Cross are desperately trying to raise funds for those in need.
“We want to make sure people have a roof over their heads, they have clean water to drink, food, clothing and anything that’s going to help them get back on their feet,” says Karen Charles with the Red Cross.
Those who want to help out with relief efforts are encouraged to donate money.
“The Canadian Red Cross along with the government has already sent $60,000 and we look to certainly send more,” says Charles.
