Provincial officials have signed off on a deal that will see 2,720 hectares of land belonging to the County of Brant transferred to the City of Brantford.
City and county officials announced the news Tuesday.
“We look forward to collectively beginning the work of better positioning our communities to thrive while planning to accommodate the future growth and economic prosperity projected for the region,” Brantford Mayor Chris Friel said in a news release.
The biggest part of the transfer is a 1,966-hectare swath of land north of Brantford’s current city limits, between Powerline Road and Governors Road.
The western edge of that parcel is expected to be used as employment lands, with the remainder used for residential development.
Also being transferred are 174 acres east of Garden Avenue and north of Highway 403, and the 580-acre Tutela Heights area around Mount Pleasant Road.
The boundary change takes effect Jan. 1. People living in areas moving from the county to the city are expected to receive further information in the mail next week.
