Investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office continue to look into why a fire erupted in an apartment complex in Caledonia. The fire left two dead and more than 70 people displaced.
“One of the main things we'll look at is the presence and function of the smoke alarms, especially within the unit of origin,” says Richard Derstroff from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office.
Two seniors who had recently moved into the building were found dead inside, and everyone else who lives there had to leave temporarily.
Monday morning, police identified the two people who were found in the apartment. 56-year-old Donna LaPierre and 70-year-old Gerald LaPierre were pronounced dead that the scene.
“There's a lot of fire damage and a lot of water damage, especially to the units that were directly below,” says Building Superintendent Jessica Gagnon.
“They have to disinfect, they have to clean, they have to make sure there's going to be no mold or mildew issues,” adds Derstroff.
As tenants wait for answers, Gagnon says they've been overwhelmed with support from the community.
“The church across the street has provided a space for them to go and they have food. Zehrs has donated some things, Tim Hortons (too), and everybody in the community has been a pretty big help,” she says
The local community centre is also accepting clothing and food donations for people as well as their pets.
“12 cats have been safely removed from the apartment and six of them are held temporarily at our animal shelter in Welland,” says Ryan Huurman from the Welland & District SPCA.
OSPCA officials say four other cats are still missing, but they've left supplies in their apartment units in case they return.
“We ensured we topped up all their food and water so that they’ve got plenty … until we are able to get to them and take them out,” says Huurman.
No official date has been given as to when tenants can expect to be able to return home, but the Ontario Fire Marshal's office says they are working as quickly as possible to get the building back to safe living conditions.
