Thousands of police officers from across the country gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to remember their colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty.
A young police officer killed in a crash in Guelph was among those being honoured Sunday.
Constable Jennifer Kovach was among the eight police and peace officers who died last year.
She was killed in March when her cruiser crossed the centre line on Imperial Road and slammed into a city bus.
Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin along with the officers donned a commemorative pin in her honour.
“This year’s been overwhelming with the loss of Constable Jennifer Kovach. When it really comes home and touches home it’s really important to join police and officers to commemorate and create a sense of memory.” Larkin says.
Kovach’s names along with the other officers will now join the more than 800 already etched on a memorial wall.
The service began 36 years ago after the murder of Ottawa Police Constable David Kirkwood.
